![]() When Singer's mute companion goes insane, Singer moves into the Kelly house, where Mick Kelly, the book's heroine (and loosely based on McCullers), finds solace in her music. ![]() Each one yearns for escape from small town life. At its center is the deaf-mute John Singer, who becomes the confidant for various types of misfits in a Georgia mill town during the 1930s. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by Houghton Mifflin in 1940. ![]() The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers With the publication of her first novel, THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, Carson McCullers, all of twenty-three, became a literary sensation. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The main characters all suffer some type of PTSD and I think that was dealt with well. I was almost ready to give up on this novel and not finish it but the half did a better job of surprising me with a couple twists hence 3 stars. It didn’t take me long to figure out what really happened and there were other plot points that were predictable. Jas was the only survivor as a 12 yr old. Two main characters Jas and Zahra take turns telling what happens to them upon returning to a graveyard ship where everyone died of mysterious circumstances. I found it hard to believe that that many peeps would follow and obey him (but then I remember who’s our current president and facepalm myself). The villain Adam is pretty two dimensional and some of his delusions of grandeur were LOL. The characters are all in their early 20’s and their “strong” belief systems are challenged and take a 180 degree turn by the end. So if you liked those series you may like this. It’s more YA storytelling on the level of Divergent and Hunger Games series. I decided to get this based on the Expanse comparison but, unfortunately it doesn’t live up to that level of writing nor story telling. ![]() ![]() The first chapter also explains what an algorithm is and how they have evolved through the years. The book opens by explaining how algorithms wield power how they can include or exclude. For a given topic, Hello World looks at the potential flaws of commonly used algorithms and examines how these flaws can be mitigated. The book is broken down into several broad sections and explains how algorithms are used in a particular facet of society such as driving or crime. It also goes some way to explaining what algorithms can’t do, and how humans can be a little too slavish in following an algorithm’s results. Written by Hannah Fry, Associate Professor in mathematics at UCL, Hello World tries to demystify exactly what an algorithm is and explain how useful they are. ![]() It’s a super-accessible overview of how algorithms are used in our everyday lives. It examines the good and bad of machine learning and asks important questions, such as should a computer be in charge of clinical diagnosis or criminal sentencing, and can an algorithm be an artist? What is Hello World? Hello World by Hannah Fry is a fascinating look at the algorithms that govern our lives. ![]() ![]() ![]() This week, following on from my review of Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s Inventing Ourselves, I’m looking at another popular science paperback. ![]() ![]() ![]() But uninvited mortals’ unexpected visit to their home suddenly changes everything as the power balance changes to General Wu’s benefit in Celestial Kingdom. Liwei already confronts with his parents to choose Xingyin over them.Īfter the ending of first novel, I thought everything would be peaceful in Xingyin’s life after she ended her mother’s imprisonment and returned back to moon. Wenzhi is so adamant to make his wrongdoings right by giving his full protection and working as devoted ally. But thankfully the author solved this problem at second round. At the first book, things heated a little instantly and we couldn’t feel true intimacy between characters. The love triangle between Xingyin-Liwei- Wenzhi is more powerful and reasonable. There are so many epic moments including surprising family reunions, dragons’ cameo, bloodthirsty fight against the phoenix and eerie, frightening war against the army of death. ![]() Let’s not forget there was no cliffhanger at the end if you don’t count the unresolved love triangle.īut second book of the duology exceeded my expectations and it’s even better than the first book. After finishing the first book of the series, I was thinking how the sequel will exceed its perfection. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() No one seems to remember when they got there, and when Beck digs deeper into the town’s enigmatic leader and his daughter, Avery, she begins to suspect that they know more than they’re letting on.Īs Beck and her sister search for answers about their mother, she and Avery are increasingly drawn together, and their unexpected connection brings up emotions Beck has fought to keep buried.
